Advocacy Basics

What is Advocacy and why is it important?

Advocacy is defined as actions taken by individuals, groups, and organizations on behalf of others to defend, support, and protect those who have been disenfranchised and overlooked by society . This action is generally in support of a policy or legislation. Using tools such as education, social media, grassroots organization, and community outreach as well as lobbying of local, state, and national representatives, to affect change and seek justice.

Why should you care about advocacy? The short answer is because someone needs to. In today's "me first" society, fewer people are active in every level of government. Many who do have an interest aren't sure how to help and where to start. This is where our Advocacy Toolbox can help. MAC will provide tools and guidance to become an effective citizen lobbyist.

As Christians, we are called to help our fellow man. Please take a look at this publication from the United Church of Christ, focusing on the Biblical Foundations for Advocacy for inspiration.
