Contact Senator Daines - Sentencing Reform

The Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act is poised for passage in the U.S. Senate but Montana Association of Christians members must let Sen. Daines know you want his support.

Call 202-224-3121 AND
write Sen. Daines!

This week Senate leaders will promote plans to move a new and improved criminal justice reform bill for a vote, but we need a couple more senators to join them, including Senator Steve Daines.

I know you have received my pleas before about calling on Congress to advance criminal justice reform. This time Montana really matters in our advocacy strategy. Senator Daines has indicated that he is leaning towards co-sponsorship of a newly negotiated Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act, S. 2123. Please call Sen. Daines today and tell him you want to end excessive and racially disparate mandatory minimum sentences for low-level drug offenses. His co-sponsorship would make a HUGE difference in convincing Senate leadership of the broad bipartisan support for this reform.

You can reach Sen. Daines through the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 AND by writing him to urge his cosponsorship of the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act.

Here is a sample script you can use:
"Hi, my name is __________. As [member of the Montana Association of Christians], I believe in the power of redemption and support a criminal justice system that offers second chances. I urge Senator Daines to not only cosponsor the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act (S. 2123), but to urge Senator McConnell to make passing it a priority!"
The Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2015 would, among other provisions:
  • Reduce mandatory minimums sentences;
  • Make retroactive those reductions as well as provisions of the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010;
  • Expand judicial discretion in setting sentences below the mandatory minimum for nonviolent, low-level drug offenses;
  • Codify the ban on juvenile solitary confinement in federal prisons;
  • Offer pathways for prisoners who participate in anti-recidivism and re-entry programs to finish their sentences in halfway houses or on home confinement, rather than in prison.

Thank you for your commitment to justice and for your prophetic voice for reform.

Sincerely,
Kara Gotsch
Director of Advocacy of the Interfaith Criminal Justice Coalition
